Daily Prayer - Sunday 01 April 2012
Opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi is standing for a seat in the Burmese parliament in by-elections tomorrow (1 April) as the country makes progress towards democracy after decades of military rule. A quasi-civilian government took power last year, and President Thein Sein’s reforms have been praised on the international stage. But the military’s abuses continue, particularly against the country’s mainly Christian ethnic minorities. The Burmese army’s brutal offensive in Kachin state, which is over 90% Christian, continues unabated. Give thanks for signs of genuine progress in Burma and that international observers have been allowed to monitor the by-elections. Pray that these will be free and fair and will lead to further improvement in human rights, especially for the long-suffering ethnic-minority Christians.
