Almost six years have passed since the end of Sudan’s disastrous civil war, in which millions of Christians in the South were killed or displaced, as the North fought to impose sharia on the South. In January 2011 a referendum is due to be held on the independence of the mainly Christian South, which under the peace agreement has had a considerable measure of autonomy from the largely Muslim North. Problems persist for Christians throughout the country. In the North, sharia is in force. Conversion from Islam is punishable by death, and although the penalty is seldom imposed, converts may face imprisonment or torture, and come under intense pressure from family and community. Christians endure discrimination in education and employment, and many restrictions on their activities.

The South was wrecked in the war, and although the churches there enjoy more freedom, they are still vulnerable to insecurity, poverty and violence. There are also fears that a vote for independence in 2011 may re- ignite the armed conflict.
During the war a generation of young Christian Southerners were deprived of schooling, so education for today’s Christian children is a vital need. Barnabas Aid supports schools for displaced children in the North, including two in the capital, Khartoum. We also provide help for three schools in the South, which enables the children to achieve better grades and also pays for a daily nutritious meal for them.
