Christian villages at heart of Indonesia’s triple disaster
Project(s): 00-634
Country: Indonesia

Barnabas Aid has sent immediate aid
Mainly Christian islands are at the heart of the three-fold disaster of earthquake, tsunami and volcanic eruption that have killed hundreds and displaced thousands in Indonesia this week.
A 7.7 magnitude undersea earthquake triggered the three-metre high tsunami, which pounded the Mentawai Islands, off the coast of West Sumatra, on Monday evening. The following day Mount Merapi on the island of Java erupted, spewing out clouds of ash and jets of searing gas. The combined death toll has topped 300 with over 400 missing and tens of thousands displaced as homes were destroyed.
Barnabas Aid has today released money from our Disaster Relief Fund for immediate use in Mentawai – a collection of small islands that are predominantly Christian – for food, clothing and medicine. Rescuers are struggling to reach the worst-affected communities following the tsunami, which swept away 13 villages.
Reports are starting to reach Barnabas Aid of specific losses, including the destruction of one church building and the flooding of another that ruined the entire contents. Our partners in Indonesia contacted Barnabas Aid today with an urgent appeal for support and prayers.
And they expressed fears about how the Christian population may be affected in the aftermath of the tsunami. Our partners said there is a pattern of increasing Muslim presence following disasters across Indonesia. For example, the Christian population of Nias island off North Sumatra was reduced from almost 100 to 70 per cent in only two years after the major earthquake in 2005.
Dr Patrick Sookhdeo, International Director of Barnabas Aid, said: “Once again Indonesia is afflicted by natural disasters having not long recovered from the devastating tsunami of 2004 and more recent earthquakes. Barnabas Aid was on the frontline of previous aid efforts to help Christians affected; will you help us to do likewise now?”

A church leader in Padang, West Sumatra, appealed for our prayers. He said:
As we see the pictures and hear the stories of lost homes and missing or dead loved ones, [the] churches feel the hurt, and listen to cries out for help. The pain, the sadness, the loss, the devastation, it’s almost too much to bear even to watch, even from a distance. Yet, there are hundreds or thousands who are living this nightmare. And God, we pray for them with all of our hearts and souls.
- Pray that rescuers will soon be able to reach those in most need and that many who are missing will be found alive and well.
- Pray that Barnabas Aid partners will receive adequate resources to be able to help those in need.
- Pray that Christians affected by the disasters will know the Lord’s comfort and presence in their distress and loss.
