Over 95% of Iraq’s population are Muslim. The small Christian minority, who are the indigenous people of the land, are being persecuted by Muslim extremists who want to “cleanse” their country of any trace of Christianity, literally exterminating Iraqi Christians.
These extremists are threatening Christians that they must convert to Islam, leave or die. Iraqi Christians will not abandon their faith, and many of them have either fl ed their homes and villages or been killed. The Christmas and New Year season is often a time of extra violence against Christians and against churches or other Christian buildings. But this can happen at other times as well. For example in July 2009 bombs were detonated outside seven Christian sites in one weekend.
Hundreds of thousands of Christians have fl ed the violence against them, seeking refuge in stable parts of northern Iraq, and as far away as Syria, Jordan and Lebanon. Barnabas Aid is helping these refugees by providing food aid and other basic necessities. We also fund training in skills that will help them get work to support themselves.
Barnabas Aids two mobile medical clinics, which bring doctors and medicines to some of the neediest families in northern Iraq. In addition, we are funding the construction of several apartment blocks for Iraqi Christians refugees in the Nineveh Plains of northern Iraq.
Barnabas Aid projects include:
Feeding Iraqi Christians in Iraq (Ref. 20-246)
Accommodation for Iraqi Christian refugees (Ref. 20-710)
Feeding Iraqi Christian refugees in neighbouring countries (Ref. 20-383)

- Please pray for God’s protection over Iraqi Christians who continue to face hostility, threats and attacks in their homeland.
- Give thanks that the building of the new apartments for refugees is progressing well.
- Pray too for healing for those Christians who have been injured in attacks and for the families of those killed, that they will stand firm in their faith.
- Pray that the hostile activities of Muslim extremists will cease, so that Iraqi Christians can return to their communities.
