Kazakhstan is the ninth largest country in the world and almost 50% of the total population are Christian, many of them from a Russian background. The largest religious group are the Muslims. Converts to Christianity endure discrimination for taking up their cross to follow Him, yet there is considerable cause for hope. Amidst the oppression, there is sustained church growth and even church-planting amongst the ethnic Kazakh people, despite frequent pressure from the Muslim communities.
Kazakhstan used to be relatively free compared with most other Central Asian countries, but the Government is now increasingly restrictive in the way that it treats the Christian population. Officials encourage intolerance towards non-Muslim minorities and towards the free expression of thought and conscience. Protestant Christians are especially targeted with fi nes increasing for unregistered worship and the issuing of Government guidelines on how to avoid the influence of non-traditional groups. Thus, the young Kazakh Church finds itself pressed on every side.
In this context Barnabas has been helping with a number of projects to train and equip Christians, support Christian workers and provide resources to strengthen the Church. Literature is a very important means of encouraging believers and spreading the Gospel. Barnabas Aid provides support for translation and printing of Christian literature into the Kazakh language and other Central Asian languages. We also help to cover the cost of production for a popular children’s magazine in the Kazakh language that provides encouragement and teaching for Christian young people.
Barnabas Aid projects include:
Children’s Christian magazine (Ref. 80-664)

- Please pray that all those involved in sharing the Gospel in Kazakhstan can continue to be encouraged by such growth and not disheartened by the problems that it causes.
- Pray that each book or magazine will be an encouragement and source of strength to many people, as it is shared between them.
- Give thanks for all those who have heard the Good News already and pray that they may remain bold in sharing that same news despite opposition.
