Kyrgyzstan latest: Christians step in with aid as authorities are slow to deliver
Project(s): 00-345
Country: Kyrgyzstan
| Christians are tirelessly distributing food and medicines in ravaged Kyrgyzstan, while aid from other countries is allegedly sold at a premium and local authorities fail to deliver resources efficiently. |
There is an urgent need for more supplies, particularly in the southern city of Osh, which was left devastated by last week's clashes.
Uzbeks who had fled the violence to neighbouring Uzbekistan are now starting to return, with many finding their homes have been destroyed. The UN refugee agency (UNHCR) estimates that there are some 300,000 people displaced inside Kyrgyzstan, including 40,000 with urgent shelter needs. The authorities say around 9,000 people have returned to their homes from Uzbekistan and within Kyrgyzstan.
Reports to Barnabas Aid this week highlight the brave and tireless efforts of local Christians to provide for those in need.
One pastor said:
"I am asking you to pray for peace in our land. This year is a bloody year for Kyrgyzstan and still there are terrible conflicts between ethnic groups going on in the country. Pastors are asking to pray for safety in ministering in destroyed areas."
In Osh, humanitarian help from other countries is allegedly being sold "for terrible prices", while the local authorities' administration of aid is reported to be chaotic. Rumours are rife that some foodstuffs - particularly bread - are being left to rot away. There were said to be lengthy queues of people waiting for help at the local administration offices, but allegedly no assistance was provided for a week.
Churches and Christian groups have been distributing aid and food packages, not only to Uzbek Christians but also to Uzbek districts where around 30,000 people are fearful to go out to buy supplies. They also delivered medicines to an area where there had been gunfire just half an hour earlier.
Despite the turmoil and scenes of human tragedy, several local churches met for worship on Sunday 20 June.
Barnabas Aid is channelling donations to help Christian victims caught up in this situation.

Please continue to remember Kyrgyzstan in your prayers:
- Pray that food and medicines would reach all those in need, and that those whose homes have been destroyed would be provided with shelter.
- Thank God for the generous and brave efforts of Christians to meet people's needs, and pray for their protection and strength to continue this vital work.
- Continue to pray for the Lord's protection of Christians in Kyrgyzstan who are now being targeted because of their faith as well as running the risk of violence from those who do not want Kyrgyz people to help Uzbeks (see below) Pray especially for a young Uzbek Christian couple whose house was burnt down.
