Whenever the world’s worst persecutors of Christians are recorded, North Korea is always found near the top of the list. Christianity is feared as a rival to the offi cial ideology of Juche (self-reliance) and the national cult of the Leader; no other religion or loyalty is acceptable to the regime. It is illegal to be a Christian or to take part in any Christian activity. Those arrested are subject to fi nes, imprisonment in brutal labour camps, torture or even death; it is estimated that some 400 Christians a year are executed. Security offi cers pretend to be Christians or pastors to trap believers, and will arrest whole families for one person’s offence. Yet remarkably the Church appears to be growing, and a recent estimate numbers it at 200,000-400,000 people.
Most of the nation is also desperately needy, and Christians share in the poverty, malnutrition and shortages suffered by the general population. Barnabas supports a Christian-run bakery project that provides employment for impoverished Christians and free bread for the poor and hungry. Hundreds of children, some of them Christians, eat the bread each day and so are saved from starvation. The project has started three bakeries so far, but the co-ordinators hope to extend it to every main city in North Korea.
Barnabas Aid projects include:

Extract taken from Barnabas Aid's Advent prayer booklet 2009
- Pray for the persecuted Christians of North Korea, that in the face of such severe repression they will stand firm in their faithfulness to the Lord.
- Pray for the one in five Christians believed to be in labour camps, that they may have strength for each day and grace to forgive their tormentors.
- Give thanks that Christ is building His Church in such a harsh environment.
- Pray for those who work at the bakery supported by Barnabas, and for the many who are nourished by its bread. Ask that the plans to expand the project will be fulfilled.
