Preparing for the Worst
Project(s): 00-634
Country: South and East Asia, Middle East and North Africa, Africa
Barnabas Aid has carried out regional Disaster Management Training for our project partners in various parts of the world, including the Middle East, South Asia and Africa.
The workshops cover both the principles of Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) and a practical method for gathering information from the community, called Participatory Rural Assessment (PRA).
They help communities prepare for future disaster and limit its effects by analysing:
- Hazard (situation that can lead to danger or loss of life)
- Vulnerability (condition that reduces the ability to anticipate, resist or recover)
- Capacity (ability to anticipate, resist or recover from hazards)
This is where PRA comes into play as a system for gathering detailed information on economic, natural, constructed, individual and social elements within a community. Along with hazards and events, these features are charted on maps, timelines and calendars, and ranked in order of the most influential. It is vital that the whole community is involved in this process, because different people will have different experiences and priorities that must be brought to bear in the subsequent formation of risk reduction strategies.
Other sources such as local government statistics, media and newspaper reports and weather information are also used as part of the hazard assessment process.
This information then forms the basis of long-term risk reduction plans.
