URGENT: Stricken Pakistani Christians need help as the waters rise
Country: South and East Asia, Pakistan
One year after the lives and livelihoods of many Pakistani Christians were devastated by surging floods, once more they find themselves in grievous distress, as large swathes of the country are again under deep water.

Up to 6 million people, mainly in the province of Sindh, are caught up in the disastrous floods. Many of them were only just recovering from last year’s catastrophe. Hundreds of thousands of homes and millions of acres of crops have been swept away beyond recall.
Thousands of people are in emergency camps, where facilities are often desperately inadequate; many more are camped in appalling conditions by roadsides. They are in acute danger from diseases such as malaria, dysentery and dengue fever, and millions of helpless children are threatened with diarrhoea.
In some parts the floods are worse than those of 2010, where there has been as much rainfall in a few days as in the entire monsoon season. The rains are the worst for a hundred years, and more are expected for several weeks.
Christians in peril
Amid all this chaos and anguish, our Christian brothers and sisters suffer all the more. Already very poor, the loss of their homes and livelihoods leaves them with no means of support or survival. And they are all too often shamefully overlooked in the distribution of aid.
A senior church leader in Pakistan told Barnabas Aid:
I am terribly sad to see the destruction and poor condition of the people affected by heavy rains. I have noticed and seen that Christians are being deprived of the help, relief and support that other people are getting.
The Christians’ most urgent need is for food, clean water, and hygiene. We have sent grants for our partners in some of the worst-affected areas to provide immediate aid to 886 Christian families with food packages and health and hygiene kits. Each contains food such as wheat flour, rice and cooking oil, a large bottle of mineral water, and mosquito nets, soap and bacterial wash.
But many more Christian families are in need of this emergency help. Each parcel costs £32 (AUS$49; NZ$61; US$51; €37) and supplies the food and hygiene needs of a family for up to a month.
Dr Patrick Sookhdeo, International Director of Barnabas Aid, said:
In this latest calamity our brothers and sisters in Pakistan have no way to help themselves, and other organisations may never come to their aid. They are crying out to us for their very lives. Will you please help us help them to survive?
