An estimated 200 civilians were slaughtered by Islamist terrorists in a Christian-majority town in Borno State, north-eastern Nigeria, on 4 March.

Fighters overran a Nigerian Army base near the town of Ngoshe, Gwoza Local Government Area (LGA), killing around 50 soldiers.

The terrorists then attacked Ngoshe along with its surrounding villages, killing 200 people and abducting at least 300 others.

One resident reported that dozens of Christians had been beheaded by the Islamists.

“They burned down every church in these communities, as well as schools, a police station and everything that stands for modern use,” he added.

These reports appear to be confirmed in several videos that have been posted online. According to local media, one video showed fighters boasting of having killed the “infidels”.

Last appeal: Restore dignity and confidence to persecuted Nigerian Christians

Reports differ on whether the massacre was carried out by Boko Haram or Islamic State West Africa Province.

Gwoza LGA was held by Boko Haram – at that time affiliated to Islamic State (IS, ISIS, ISIL, Daesh) – and claimed as part of the caliphate from August 2014 until it was recaptured in April 2015.

Many residents had only returned to the area in recent months.

Many have been displaced by these fresh attacks. It is not known how many of the victims were Christians. Some were Muslims, at that time breaking their daily Ramadan fast.

Terrorist activity has increased across Borno State in recent months. On 17 March, a suicide bombing in Maiduguri, the state capital, left at least 23 dead and more than 100 injured.

How you can pray

Intercede for our brothers and sisters in Christ, especially those now displaced once again from their homes. Ask the Lord to comfort the bereaved. Pray that there will be peace from terrorism and violence for all people in Borno State and across Nigeria.
