Soriah is one of thousands of Sudanese Christians whose lives were violently disrupted by the outbreak of war in Sudan. What had once been a familiar routine of work, worship and family fellowship became a daily struggle for survival almost overnight. As conflict swept through neighbourhoods and towns, churches were forced to close, communities were torn apart, and many believers found themselves targeted simply because of their Christian faith.
Soriah's full story will be available here in early 2026.
Who is Soriah?
Soriah is a Sudanese Christian, a devoted mother and grandmother. Her husband remained behind in Sudan, and each day she feels the weight of being apart from him, from her home, and from the church she loves. She longs for safety and security, praying that the Lord will comfort her and heal the deep wounds in her heart.
For Soriah and many of her family members, staying was no longer an option. With ongoing fighting, shortages of food, and growing insecurity, they joined the mass exodus of displaced people fleeing across Sudan’s borders seeking safety. Carrying only what they could manage, they embarked on a long and exhausting journey to Egypt. The road was dangerous, as risky border crossings, uncertain transport and the constant fear of violence or exploitation weighed heavily on every step.
Eyes full of faith and determination, facing life’s struggles with hope
What challenges did Soriah face upon arriving in Egypt?
Arriving in Egypt did not mean the end of hardship. Like many refugee Christians, Soriah found herself without legal status, a steady income, or secure accommodation. Families were forced into overcrowded rooms, sharing tiny spaces with strangers simply to keep a roof over their heads. Finding food became a daily challenge. Children were withdrawn from school because most of them did not have legal status, making it impossible to formally enrol or access public education. Medical care and trauma support remained far beyond reach for many.
Soriah now lives in a neighbourhood marked by displacement and struggle, yet life continues to grow there
How did Barnabas Aid and local Christian communities support her?
Yet amid displacement and loss, Soriah clung tightly to her faith. Prayer became her anchor, a daily reminder that God was present even in exile. Local Christian fellowships in Egypt opened their doors to displaced believers, offering not just worship but community and comfort to those who had lost everything, and open heart, amidst many closed doors. Through these churches and Barnabas partners working on the ground, Soriah began receiving practical support including food parcels, essential supplies and assistance toward basic housing needs.

What helped Soriah maintain and strengthen her faith during displacement?
This help meant more than survival. It was a sign to Soriah and many others that they had not been forgotten by the global Body of Christ. Fellowship with other believers who had fled Sudan provided spiritual encouragement as they shared stories of loss, endurance and hope together, testimonies that continue to strengthen the scattered Sudanese Church.
Today, Soriah continues to rebuild her life in Egypt. Challenges remain immense. Employment opportunities are limited, legal restrictions remain uncertain, and trauma lingers from the horrors of war. But her faith stands firm. She testifies that God’s presence has sustained her through the darkest of journeys, guiding her steps from danger to refuge and providing strength for each new day.

What does Soriah’s story reveal about the experiences of displaced Sudanese Christians?
Soriah’s life and story reflect the unfolding reality for thousands of displaced Sudanese Christians, families who once worshipped together in villages and towns now scattered across borders, seeking hospitality and hope in foreign lands. They need ongoing prayer, practical support, pastoral care, and advocacy as they attempt to rebuild lives uprooted by conflict.
Soriah’s testimony echoes the words of Isaiah 41:10: “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” Her journey reminds us that while homes and possessions may be lost, faith remains unshaken, and the Church, the Body of Christ, remains united across every border.

The Lord’s words speak deep truth to all of us in this season, and especially to our Sudanese brothers and sisters. “For no one is cast off by the Lord for ever. Though he brings grief, he will show compassion, so great is his unfailing love” (Lamentations 3:31–32).
