You have provided help and hope for Egypt’s most vulnerable

9 June 2026

“The weekly food package not only relieved my hunger but also reminded me that my church family has not forgotten me,” shared an elderly Christian widow in Sohag, Egypt.

Her words reflect the impact of a life-changing food distribution project supporting some of Egypt’s most vulnerable Christians, widows and orphans living in extreme poverty.

Through close collaboration with churches in Cairo and Sohag, the Barnabas-funded project reached 250 individuals, providing consistent food aid and essential support during a period of severe economic hardship.

For many families, these weekly food packages have become a lifeline, ensuring both physical survival and emotional reassurance.

The vulnerability of widows and orphans in Egypt

Widows and orphans remain among the most at-risk groups in Egyptian society. With limited access to pensions or state support, many widows struggle to meet basic needs, while orphaned children are often left without protection or stability.

“Most widows rely on support from their churches,” explained the project partner. “Orphans cannot survive without the help of their churches.”

This reality is deepened by Egypt’s ongoing economic crisis, where food prices have risen sharply and nearly two-thirds of the population are believed to be living below the poverty line. For widows and orphans, poverty is often compounded by isolation and lack of support networks.

Marina, 17, and her two younger siblings, struggled to find enough food each day after they were orphaned. Thankfully they were sustained through weekly church-supported provision, restoring hope in the midst of loss.

Through this partnership, faith communities in Egypt have been able to embody the call of Scripture “to look after orphans and widows in their distress” (James 1:27).

How you can pray

Pray for widows and orphaned children in Egypt who continue to face severe economic hardship, asking God to provide daily needs, protection and lasting stability. Pray for churches in Cairo and Sohag as they serve vulnerable families with limited resources, that they would be strengthened, encouraged, and sustained in compassion. Ask God to open new pathways of provision and opportunity in the midst of Egypt’s economic crisis, and pray that those who receive aid would experience not only physical relief but also deep spiritual hope and the assurance of God’s unfailing care.
