At least 19 Christians killed as Islamist violence continues in northern Mozambique

6 October 2025

Islamic State Mozambique (IS-M) has claimed the killing of at least 19 more Christians in the north of the country.

According to monitoring from the Terrorism Research & Analysis Consortium, these killings took place between mid-September and mid-October.

The worst-affected area was Chiure District, Cabo Delgado Province, where in several attacks four believers lost their lives and four church buildings were burned.

One death was recorded in the Memba District of Nampula Province. In two other attacks in Memba District, the terrorists boasted of burning two church buildings and 110 “Christian homes … praise be to God”.

Most IS-M activity takes place in northern Cabo Delgado, and claims of large-scale attacks and killings in Nampula represent an additional concern.

In total IS-M has claimed to have killed at least 45 Christians since July.

The group has also set up roadblocks in parts of Cabo Delgado to prevent the delivery of humanitarian aid to the region. Travellers are being intercepted and, if they are Christians, charged a tax of around £125-£385 ($150-$460; €138-€422) to be allowed to continue their journey.

How you can pray

Ask our Father to protect Christian communities and other victims of the Islamist insurgency in northern Mozambique. Pray that the faith of our brothers and sisters will remain steadfast even as they face violence and hatred.
