Church minister abducted and murdered in Kaduna State, Nigeria

11 March 2025

The brutal murder of Sylvester Okechukwu, church minister in Kaduna State, Nigeria, has sparked outrage across the country.

Okechukwu, who ministered at a church in the Kaura Local Government Area of Kaduna State, was kidnapped from his residence on the evening of 4 March. His body was found the following morning.

The incident highlights the ongoing security crisis that disproportionately affects church ministers.

A spokesman from the Dicoese of Kafanchan described Sylvester as “a dedicated servant of God, who worked selflessly in the vineyard of the Lord, spreading the message of peace, love, and hope”.

“This untimely and brutal loss has left us heartbroken and devastated,” he added.

The minister’s abduction occurred just two days after two others were kidnapped in Edo State on 4 March, underscoring the increasing dangers faced by church ministers in Nigeria.

Church leaders have frequently been targeted by criminal gangs and extremist groups, often for ransom or as acts of terror against Christian communities. In November Matthew Hassan Kukah, a senior church leader in Sokoto State, said that the church is facing “an epidemic of kidnappings”.

The murder has reignited calls for improved security measures, particularly in regions where church ministers and Christian communities are increasingly vulnerable to violence.

How you can pray

Pray that God will sustain His people in Nigeria, granting them courage, peace and protection. Ask the Lord to bring comfort to those who are suffering, to uphold the faith of His children, and to let justice prevail in the land.
