Suspected Islamists kill 43 Christians in Benue State, Nigeria

4 June 2025

Suspected Islamist gunmen attacked two communities in Christian-majority Benue State, Nigeria on Sunday 1 June, killing at least 43 people.

The attacks took place in Gwer West and Apa Local Government Areas (LGA) of the state in the country’s Middle Belt. Benue State’s population is 98% Christian.

More than 25 people were shot and killed in Edikwu Ankpati, Apa LGA, at around 7pm.

Chief Daniel Abomtse, the traditional ruler of Gwer West, said that 18 had been killed in Tse Antswam, a suburb of Naka town, at around the same time. “Many people sustained varied degree of injuries,” he added.

“Search is still on,” he continued, “because many ran into the bush with gun wounds and some also entered the well to escape the herdsmen.”

Chief Abomtse noted that the attack on Tse Antswam took place opposite a military checkpoint along the Naka-Makurdi road.

These incidents follow a series of attacks by suspected Islamists on Christian communities in Benue State in April 2025, which resulted in at least 83 deaths.

How you can pray

Pray for those bereaved in these horrific attacks to know the Lord’s comfort and strength. Ask God to direct the authorities to identify the perpetrators and administer justice. Pray for greater protection for Christian communities in Benue State and across Nigeria’s troubled Middle Belt.
