10 March 2020

A small church on the Greek island of Lesbos was damaged on 2 March by unknown vandals.

Local press reports said the damage to the interior of the well-loved church near Moria village had caused much sadness in the area. The vandals also wrecked historic Christian religious items and furniture in the church, which residents say has been vandalised several times in the recent past. No arrests have been made for the latest attack.

The situation is tense on Lesbos, where clashes are taking place almost daily between police and migrants at the Moria refugee camp, who are protesting about overcrowded conditions. The camp was originally intended to hold 3,000 refugees, who arrived on the island by boat mostly from Afghanistan and Syria, but numbers have soared to 19,000 in the last six months.
