Nine men were killed during an attack on a farming community in Christian-majority Benue State, Nigeria, on 13 April by suspected Fulani Islamist militants.

Residents said the murders in Apa Local Government Area (LGA) have left entire households shattered, with many families now facing an uncertain future without their primary providers.

“The world needs to understand that these are not just numbers,” said a community member. “These are fathers, sons and leaders whose absence will be felt for generations.”

Among the dead was 31-year-old Elaigwu Pelu, a father of four who had struggled to build a life despite losing his own parents early.

Others included John Peter Musa, 33, who had two young children; Ogagwu John, 31, a father of three; Eluma Ogbeni, 30, who had four children; John Elegbo, 39, a father of five; and Gideon Monday, 29, an only child who was described as his parents’ “hope and continuity”.

They died alongside community elders Oigene Ogah, 62; Adah Aboje, 78, and Peter Omafu, 59.

“Before we move on like people of zero empathy, these are the details that must be put out for the world to see,” said a resident as he helped with the joint burial of the victims.

This latest attack comes just over a week after 17 people were killed in the early hours of Easter Sunday in Mbalom in Gwer East LGA of Benue State.

How you can pray
